Ambitious Vision: Greubel Forsey At Dubai Watch Week, Greubel Forsey once again raised the bar for haute horlogerie with four outstanding creations.
People often scrutinize a timepiece with furrowed brows and serious—even pained—analyzing every detail, rationally considering its design. But sometimes, a single glance evokes a childlike wonder: a gasp followed by a knowing smile, then a bewildered shake of the head, an incredulous smile as the stunned observer tries to comprehend the exquisite craftsmanship and masterful skill before them. And when a timepiece is the work of Greubel Forsey, this is often the reaction.
Today, after more than two decades of exploration, Greubel Forsey continues to push the boundaries of haute horlogerie in his workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. This November, these two master watchmakers will showcase four special edition timepieces at Dubai Watch Week, reaffirming the unwavering commitment of Frenchman Robert Greubel and British Stephen Forsey to their creative philosophy of "artistic innovation."
First to be unveiled is the highly anticipated GMT Balancier Convexe, featuring a completely redesigned case and a powerful return. The GMT Balancier Convexe now offers a more ergonomic and comfortable wearing experience and remains the only GMT watch in the Greubel Forsey collection.
This timepiece aims to guide the wearer to contemplate their place in the world, presenting the Earth as a titanium sphere floating within a theatrical structure. The globe rotates in real time, completing a full rotation every 24 hours. Surrounding this exquisite blue-grey globe are indicators displaying world time, a second time zone, day/night cycle, and a new integrated power reserve indicator at 11 o'clock.
The new slim GMT Balancier Convexe watch is designed for adventurous individuals, offering enhanced comfort and making it especially suitable for those who frequently travel between different time zones. The case back is engraved with the names of major cities around the world, along with Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and Daylight Saving Time information, and features a hand-finished matte finish. Paying homage to La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the birthplace of Greubel Forsey, the watch replaces Paris with La Chaux-de-Fonds, placing it between Athens and London. This 42.9mm masterpiece of curved titanium case comprises 496 components (73 more than its predecessor) and boasts a 72-hour power reserve. The GMT Balancier Convexe watch is highly legible and performs exceptionally well, making it the perfect companion for your world travels.
The second piece showcased at Dubai Watch Week was the Hand Made 2, powerfully demonstrating the craftsmanship of the Greubel Forsey team. This watch, entirely hand-assembled by a single watchmaker, perfectly blends modern and traditional elements, fully embodying the brand's passion for handcrafted watchmaking. Of its 270 parts, all but five are handcrafted using traditional tools such as precision lathes, coordinate boring machines, or scalers.
The captivating hand-brushed German silver dial accentuates the grand feu enamel hour and second hands and the power reserve indicator, making them the visual focal point. The power reserve indicator, a landmark achievement, is set in a hand-crafted conical gemstone, perfectly showcasing Greubel Forsey's exquisite watchmaking skills. The movement of the Hand Made 2 watch blends craftsmanship, rich history, and innovative concepts, a perfect fusion of art and mechanics, pleasing to the eye from every angle.
If watchmaking processes were ranked by difficulty, the hand-finished titanium mainplate would undoubtedly be among the most challenging. This notoriously difficult process is the heart of the exceptional double balance wheel convex titanium watch. This limited edition timepiece is another masterpiece by Greubel Forsey at Dubai Watch Week.
The watchmakers not only challenged the craftsmanship of the brushed titanium mainplate, but also decided to hand-polish the chamfers of each balance bridge, with the bevels also hand-polished – a process requiring extremely high skill and dexterity. Now, this new 42.5mm diameter double balance wheel convex titanium watch features a newly designed double-curved case, presented in luminescent grey, subtly conforming to the wrist. This clean-cut timepiece exudes power while maintaining an artistic flair: the polished bezel is adorned with a subtle satin brush, its interplay of light and shadow adding to its captivating charm.
The fourth of Greubel Forsey's four watches is the Balancier Convexe S², a 41.5mm timepiece that has garnered attention for its small diameter, making it the smallest member of the Convexe collection. Despite its small size, this watch exudes extraordinary charm. Representing a new direction for the brand, the Balancier Convexe S² showcases a distinct architectural aesthetic, combining modernity, boldness, and urban sophistication. The first thing that catches the eye is the ergonomic titanium case, its curved design conforming to the wrist for optimal wearing comfort. The white luminescent central hands seem to leap from the case, while three meticulously handcrafted finishes—grained, satin-brushed, and mirror-polished—give the watch a layered interplay of light and shadow. Skeletonized bridges further enhance this sense of depth, offering a glimpse into the intricate mechanical structure of the Balancier Convexe S². This timepiece, combining elegance, innovation, and luxury, marks another impressive step forward for Greubel Forsey in its pursuit of handcrafted watchmaking perfection.
