What is going on with our starting quarterbacks? Over the last two weeks, four starters have gone down, and two are probably lost for the season. Two weeks ago, the Lions lost Travis Lulay in Ottawa when he suffered the fourth injury of his career on the same shoulder late in the game. In the Banjo Bowl between Saskatchewan and Winnipeg, the Riders Darian Durant took a legal hit from Bryant Turner and is gone for the season with an elbow injury. A week later, Drew Willy of the Bombers was running the ball and he was rolled on by a Lions D-linmen when tackled and suffered a shoulder injury, the severity of which has not yet been released by the Bombers. And finally in Calgary, Bo Levi Mitchell was hit by Shea Emry and has ankle and knee injuries, and according to the latest reports, will be week-to-week. Four starters, four stars gone and in the case of two of them, likely for the season. Now the question is, are all these injuries to star quarterbacks just a case of bad luck/coincidence or is there a reason for them? There is no question that defences are winning this year and the strength of the defences has been the front sevens which has to be factored in to the QB injury discussion. However, Lulay has a history of the shoulder issues, and was involved in a strange play where the ball slipped out of his hand as he was trying to throw. When he scrambled to recover the fumble, the shoulder buckled again. Durant was in the act of throwing when he was hit, and like Lulay, it was a strange play but for a different reason. On Durants injury, the official tried to blow the play dead but no one heard it and the play continued. More on that later. Drew Willy was injured in BC when he was tackled trying to run the ball, which is a very different situation to that of Lulay or Durant, but similar to how Mitchell was hurt. Mitchell was scrambling for a first down and was trying to go down in a crouch position when he was hit by Shea Emry. Two QBs hit in the act of trying to throw, and two in the act of running, which means there is no specific trend or reason that connects all four. Lulay and Durant were situations that could happen on any passing play; they were vulnerable in the pocket, got hit legally and were injured. It happens. However, Willy and Mitchell are injuries that could have been avoided. It is certainly not the quarterbacks fault, because they are caught in the middle between being tough, team-first guys that will do anything for the first down, and being smart and picking up what they can and then protecting themselves. Everyone admires and raves about the QB that puts it all on the line for the first down, but what is the cost? Coaches have said that they cant take the fight in the dog out of their leaders who want to do what ever it takes, but maybe its time they try and tame that dog just a bit. The quarterback is the player that gives the entire team hope; if he isnt capable, hope is lost. Now all wins are important, and football players are wired to give it all on every play but if Calgary or Winnipeg dont get the first down in Week 10 of the regular season, are their seasons lost? Obviously not, the franchise players are taking too many risks in the game today. Maybe its time that coaches start saying to their star QBs run if you want but NEVER take a hit you dont have to take! Lets be clear, this is not a critique on Willy or Mitchell. Everyone admires their courage and leadership abilities, but the risk when a quarterback elects to take a hit rather than hook slide for an extra yard or two outweighs the reward in the regular season. Coaches hold players out of the lineup when they are injured and begging to go back before they are ready. Its time those same coaches start instructing their franchise players to avoid taking unnecessary hits! Now to the Durant hit. According to the head of officials Glen Johnson, the correct protocol was carried out by the crew in the Banjo Bowl. One ref tried to blow the play dead by blasting his whistle four times. However no one, including the other officials on the field and all 24 players, heard it due to the unbelievable crowd noise in Winnipegs new Investors Group Field. Johnson has since reminded all the officials to be as animated as they can when trying to stop the play once the ball has been snapped and to make sure that one officials whistle is backed up by the rest of the crew. However, there will be no discipline handed out to any of the officiating crew because there was really no mistake made, which is the right decision. Also, good for Riders offensive guard Dan Clark who was beat on the play but didnt try to use the whistle issue as an excuse. Right after the game in front of a sea of cameras and microphones, he said he didnt hear any whistle and he just got beat. That couldnt have been easy when an excuse was on the tee for him. That is a sign of true character. Alan Page Vikings Jersey . But what did Roy Hodgson learn from the friendly? With the England manager needing to cut three from his group ahead of the finals, this was an opportunity for players to state their case for inclusion. Kane, Vardy star Match report of Englands 2-1 win over Turkey So who seized their chance? Who will hope for another opportunity to impress? And how will the performance affect Hodgsons tactical thoughts ahead of this summers showpiece? We take a look… Kane and Alli combination is essential Harry Kane scored his fifth England goal after being set up by Dele Alli Dele Alli set up seven of Harry Kanes Premier League goals for Tottenham this season - the joint-most productive combination between any pair of players in the division. And it took the duo just two minutes to click against Turkey, with Alli slipping a pass through the legs of his marker for Kane to slot in the opener - albeit from an offside position. Roy Hodgson felt there were lots of positives to be taken from Englands victory over Turkey but there were still things to work on Of course, both Alli and Kane have strong cases for inclusion in Roy Hodgsons starting line-up in their own right. Kane was the top scorer in the Premier League and has delivered repeatedly in the early days of his England career. Alli, too, has shone on international duty and picked up the PFA Young Player of the Year prize for his efforts with Tottenham this term. Allis assists for Kane Dele Alli has assisted Harry Kane eight times this season; more than any other player. But together they form an incisive partnership - and Hodgson must find a way to make the most of their mutual understanding. That could mean playing Alli in a more advanced midfield role, so he is closer to Kane, or by handing the pacey 20-year-old license to burst forward from a deeper position. Either way, Kane and Alli together provide a potent threat for this England side.Vardys best position is through the middle Jamie Vardy scored in his third international in a row This was just the second time Kane and Jamie Vardy had started in the same match for England and just seconds after the first whistle they almost combined to open the scoring. Kane, stepping in from the right with the ball, slipped a pass through the Turkey defence which was fractionally too heavy for Vardys run. However, Vardy spent much of the next 55 minutes wide on the left, holding his position as part of Englands attacking trio at the top of a 4-3-3. After firing Leicester City to the Premier League title with 24 goals as a central striker this season, it seemed like a waste. Rather than causing problems for Turkeys centre-backs, Vardy was restricted to showing off his less-than-impressive crossing ability. Neither of his two attempted crosses went close to finding an England player. Jamie Vardy has made a big difference to England. He worries the life out of teams. Peter Taylor A second-half tactical switch to a 4-4-2 diamond allowed Vardy to return to his central role and the Foxes forward relished the opportunity. He won a penalty - lashed wide off the post by Kane - after winning a race for a ball over the top with Mehmet Topal and twice threatened on the break late on by linking up with Kane.Vardy also kept his scoring run with England going, netting his third in three games from close range after Turkey keeper Volkan Babacan spilled Gary Cahills header. Former England caretaker boss Peter Taylor says he is an important figure tactically for Hodgson.Vardy has made a big difference to England because he always looks [to run] beyond [the opposition defence] and because he looks beyond it worries the life out of teams, Taylor told Sky Sports News HQ. They drop off and all of a sudden weve got a long pitch. If Roy plays the diamond shape you then have more bodies in that area and more space to work in to.Defensive concerns must be addressed Turkey created a number of openings against Englands defence Despite victory, there were a number of worrying moments for England as Turkey pressed for a late leveller - and, throughout, there were defensive issues Hodgson will no doubt be keen to examine.England are now three games without a clean sheet for the first time since a run of four in August 2013 and Hakan Calhanoglus opener - Turkeys first-ever goal against England - came after a catalogue of errors which saw the hosts fail to clear their lines, pick up opponents, cut out dangerous passes and hold position. England v Turkey shooting stats England Turkey Shots 15 14 Shots on target 4 4 Shots off target 10 6 Blocked shots 1 4 Hit woodwork 1 0 Turkey striker Cenk Tosun was almost a beneficiary of more slack defending at the start of the second half when he had a free header from a corner before John Stones allowed him to turn and shoot on the edge of the box.ddddddddddddAnd only a superb save from Hart in injury time prevented substitute Olcay Sahan from volleying in, after England repeatedly failed to clear the ball. Both Danny Rose and Kyle Walker impressed in the full-back positions but England as a team cannot afford to present opportunities as lightly at Euro 2016.Wilshere needs 90 minutes Jack Wilshere played for 65 minutes against Turkey Jack Wilsheres inclusion in this England squad - despite only featuring in Arsenals final three games of the season - demonstrates Hodgsons faith in the midfielder and the managers desire to give him every chance possible of making the trip to France. Now it is down to Wilshere to prove he is match fit and ready to deliver for his country. The 24-year-old insisted he was 100 per cent fit after the game but was, nonetheless, withdrawn after 65 minutes. During his time on the field, Wilshere recorded a pass completion rate of 90.9 per cent, came up with a couple of key passes and one interception - as well as a yellow card for breaking down a Turkey counter-attack. You want that type of different midfield player like Jack Wilshere for your options, whether you start him or bring him on as sub. Peter Taylor All in all it was a steady if unspectacular appearance. Peter Taylor insists Wilshere remains an important option for Hodgson, though, and expects him to be included when the squad is cut to 23 on May 31. Wilshere is so different, such a clever player, he could play for Barcelona, Taylor told Sky Sports News HQ.Hes such a talented player. You want that type of different midfield player for your options, whether you start him or bring him on as sub. He did well. Id be wrapping him up in cotton wool.Sterling still struggles with his final ball Will Raheem Sterling (right) make Roy Hodgsons final Euro 2016 squad? No outfield player made more appearances in Englands Euro 2016 qualifying campaign than Raheem Sterling but, after a tough first season at Manchester City since his big-money move from Liverpool, the winger would have hoped to have made more of a mark against Turkey. There were glimpses of his strongest attributes - early on he linked up well with Alli between the lines of the visitors defence and midfield, while in the second half he skipped past a couple of challenges with a burst of pace. But Sterlings struggles with his end product were also on show. Sterling vs Turkey Sterling vs Turkey Shots 1 Total passes 16 Completed passes 10 Attempted dribbles 9 Successful dribbles 6 Attempted crosses 3 Successful crosses 1 Touches 34 The winger recorded just two assists and six goals at Premier League top-scorers City this season and two wasted, off-target crosses against Turkey were moments of frustration. Another inaccurate pass from the left flank to the edge of the penalty box sparked a threatening Turkey counter-attack.After being withdrawn on 73 minutes, Sterling will hope to get another opportunity against Australia on Friday night to remind the England supporters - and, more importantly,
